There’s something quite amazing about standing in silence above a waterfall that drops onto a beach where nobody goes. McWay Falls might be one of Big Sur’s most iconic scenes, but catch it at the right moment and it can feel more like a secret than a postcard. Of course, the Pacific Coast Highway is hardly an unknown route – but if you’re lucky, just for a moment, you find yourself listening to nothing but the sound of water slipping down the cliff as the waves smooth out the edges of the cove below. Framed by palm trees and redwoods that have stood through more storms than we even know, this little patch of coastling remains as one of those rare spots in the world that still feel untouched; a true whisper of paradise.
