Landscape
Boszhira Valley, Kazakhstan
DJI Air 3S drone
I took the image during a photography project in Mangystau in the south-west of Kazakhstan. With the help of a guide and an excellent back-up team, we travelled through the area in April 2025 using still and drone photography to capture the region’s jaw-dropping landscapes. The area was once covered by an ancient sea, the Tethys Ocean. As the sea receded, vast areas of chalky deposits were gradually exposed. The soft rock was then eroded by the extreme climate, sculpting an otherworldly, almost surreal landscape. I took this image in the early evening. A storm had just passed through. As the sunlight started to burst through the clouds, the streaming low light started to create a dramatic shadow of the ridge on the valley floor. I used a drone camera and took a series of exposure-bracketed images across the panorama to capture the scene.
