August. Salmon are returning upstream to spawn, driven by a primeval instinct. The bears are having a feast, with lake and streams literally packed with sockeye salmon. The bears are feeding to build their reserves for the soon-to-come hibernation. Amidst the plenitude, they frolick, play, chase each other and often get into fights, to dispaly dominance. I captured one such scene near Lake Kurile in Kamchatka, Russia. The blood on their faces is from the salmon they have just been feeding on. The confrontation ended without injury to either animal.
