Pack Ice, North of Svalbard, at the edge of the Arctic Ice cap between 80 and 81 degree North Latitude

On the pack Ice North of Svalbard we encounterd a mother Polar bear with her cub. The Cub was very inquisitive, approaching our small ship, backing away, and returning to it's mother. This went on over 4 hours, during this time, there were moments of tender interaction with mother and cub rolling over each other and hugging closely. The scene was unforgettable with this show of affection in these inhospitable climes. I returned, not only with a sense of awe, but also very aware of the need to protect and conserve these magnificent creatures as global warming is causing the ise cap to recede, destroying their habitat.
