Bird Island, South Georgia
Canon Eos 7, 24-70mm, Ilford HP5
Bird Island, a small island in South Georgia, is home to thousands of penguins, albatrosses, seals, and many other marine megafauna. The wildlife here has been monitored since 1958 and scientists from the British Antarctic Survey live on the island year round to study these charismatic animals. Being in the middle of the South Atlantic, the winds whip straight from Antarctica, creating an almost everpresent fog and mirk over the island. Here, two scientists descend onto Johnson Beach through the long tussock grass and past territorial Antarctic fur seals to begin the daunting process of counting the numbers of breeding gentoo penguins - which completely swallow the whole beach!
