Capturing underwater fluorescence has been a passion of mine for many years now. This technique involves using blue (near-UV) excitation light at a specific wavelength together with a yellow barrier filter in front of the camera lens. The yellow filter blocks much of the excess reflected blue light, allowing the natural biofluorescence to be captured more effectively. While first experimenting with this technique I was surprised by the wonderful biofluorescence shown by many crustacean species and they continue to be a favourite subject of mine to shoot. This particular harbour crab was spotted during a wonderful evening dive in Loch Long and I was pleased that it sat still and allowed to take a few shots, certainly uncommon for this usually feisty and skittish species. I used a macro wet lens to capture this close-up shot and used camera settings F4.5, ISO400, 1/80th.
