Description

Taken in about 15 meters of water, this macro image shows the layers of a Sea Pen and between those layers a tiny Porcelain Crab can be seen taking shelter. The Sea Pen is actually an animal anchored to the sandy ocean floor, or more precisely an organized colony of animals. Different parts of the colony have different functions and work together for survival and growth. The tiny crab is well camouflaged within the Sea Pen colony. What appeals to me about this composition is the symmetry of the Sea Pen's branches, broken only by the one rolled up branch and also the presence of the tiny crab. 1/400th at f/13, ISO 200.
