Arlo Parks is an artist who uses music and poetry as a lens through which to explore and express her life experiences. In her latest album, she cites inspiration from a quote in the Joanna Hogg film “The Souvenir” : “we don’t want to see life as it is played out we want to see life as it is experienced in this soft machine.” I used the caramel to be suggestive of a skin tone, setting the backdrop literally and symbolically, then the sky backdrop in the reflection as a symbol of being alive. I set up the mirror to be representative of life as it is reflected through our experiences, both free yet contained and restrained by the ‘soft machine’.
