Description

Not many people have the chance or inclination to experience crocodiles within their aquatic domain, for good reasons. Having taken the plunge into photographing the Northern Territory's freshwater ecosystems, shedding light on Australia's smaller - and less dangerous - crocodile, the freshwater crocodile, has become a top priority for me. This image depicts an early encounter with a juvenile, around one metre in length, the croc is sheltering from the midday sun under the dense foliage of a pandanus plant, only it's eyes and nostrils above the surface of the crystal clear water. To take this image I approached the croc very carefully and slowly, holding my breath to avoid releasing bubbles, I was then able to back away and leave the croc without causing a disturbance.
