By chance, a few days earlier, I had found a female common octopus tending her eggs at Porth Kerris on the south coast of Cornwall. On returning to check their progress, I could clearly see not only the growth of the eggs, but also the deterioration of the mother. Female octopuses are semelparous, reproducing only once in their lives before dying after protecting and nourishing the eggs, in this case through starvation. Although in a weakened state, the octopus tracked me carefully with her piercing, still vibrant eye. A bittersweet moment.
