Amid the rolling mists near Ammanford, a Welsh folk dancer stands in traditional dress, holding a small bunch of daffodils. The land stretches around her, dramatic and timeless, its muted tones echoing the depth and beauty of Wales itself. In this still moment, she becomes both figure and symbol embodying “hiraeth,” that profound Welsh longing for home, heritage, and the soul of a landscape that shapes identity across generations. What makes this image special to me is the way the landscape and the dancer appear to speak to each other. The mountain is rugged, vast, and wrapped in mist, yet to the left of the frame stands a figure in traditional Welsh dress rooted, steadfast, carrying daffodils as a small but powerful emblem of identity. I wasn’t aiming for just capturing a portrait, but something deeper, a feeling that evokes hiraeth, that unshakable sense of connection to place. As a Welsh woman myself, I wanted to reflect the timeless dialogue between land and people, memory and presence. 1/200s | f7.1 | ISO 200
