Notsuke Bay, Notsuke peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan

In winter, parts of Notsuke Bay, contained by the Notsuke peninsula on Hokkaido, Japan, freeze sufficiently to carry a person’s weight. Ice fishermen take advantage and drill or carve holes in the ice through which they drop their line and bate. It is then a question of waiting for a fish to bite! Some fishermen erect small tents in which to shelter but this one was braving the elements. I lay on the ice to get a low-angle view of the fisherman and his cart of equipment. I could feel how cold he must have been. I often wonder whether he was successful and the effort was worth it.
