Water Life
Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia
Sony A1 camera. Sony FE 90mm F2.8 macro G OSS lens. Nauticam underwater housing. 1 x Backscatter Mini-Flash and snoot.
This image shows a small, but potentially deadly, Blue Ringed Octopus. To isolate the octopus from its rubble background I used a "snooted" strobe light to produce a narrow beam of light. I handheld the snoot above the octopus with my left hand to precisely aim the beam of light, while operating the camera with my right hand. The octopus "activates" its blue rings to warn any potential predators of its toxicity. This individual had spread itself nicely, displaying a large number of its blue ring markings and making for an enticing shot. The 1983 James Bond movie, Octopussy, is likely responsible for giving this particular species of octopus greater notoriety. 1/320th, f22, ISO 250.
