Landscape
Santo Amaro, Lençois Maranhenses national park in the state of Maranhão, Brazil
Canon EOS R5, RF 100-500 + Benro tripod
Context: I was on the lookout for a shot where I could make use of the long lens to compress the layers of dunes, so it was great to be at a higher vantage point for sunset. Camera settings: f/10, 1/400s, ISO 500 Lençois Maranhenses national park in Brazil, with its endless rolling sand dunes and crystalline freshwater lakes, has got an otherworldly feel. I hadn't had lots of luck with sunsets during the -mostly rainy- evenings, but I got treated to a glorious sunset on my last day in Santo Amaro... The tops of the dunes, with the sand relentlessly moved by the wind, getting beautifully backlit by the warm glow of the setting sun. Whilst I initially wasn't too keen on the groups of eco-tourists entering my composition, their silhouettes ended up being an integral part of the photograph as they bring both a sense of scale and a human element that draws the viewer's eye.
