I feel very emotional about this shot. The hand is my mother's. She doesn't like me telling people her age, but you can see that she is not as young as she used to be. She also doesn't like her hands. However, for me they not only tell a story of a long life, but at a more personal level - they speak to me of all the nurturing that she has done over the years. I love these hands. My mum takes a great pride in her appearance. She is always well dressed (whereas I am not!) She also has a great sense of humour. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to set up a shot with one of my little model figures painting her nails. She was very reluctant because her hands look so old but agreed to do so for my sake. I was wary about putting this image up on social media in case people were unkind and because my mum follows me on Instagram. So I posted it after midnight when I knew she's be in bed, thinking that I would delete the post if reactions were negative. I needn't have worried. This turned out to be one of my most popular miniature photos ever. I felt the love. More importantly - my mum did. Taken at 1/4 sec, f/18 and Auto ISO (200) and -1 step exposure compensation.
