This portrait was taken for St David’s Day, “Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant” in Welsh, of dancer, Ela Adams, from Dawnswyr Tawerin, performing in her traditional Welsh woollen costume, on the Black Mountain, Ammanford. The dancers costumes are based on the historic 19th century clothing of working Welsh women living in rural areas. All of the dance teams costumes are made at a local Welsh woollen mills. In the image, Ela holds a daffodil whilst she dances in the rain - daffodils are considered the national flower of Wales along with leeks. I wanted to capture the beauty of Welsh dance and traditional costume in a raw, natural, Welsh setting. Although the weather was seemingly against us, I particularly liked how the misty rain allowed the colours on the costume to stand out combined with the earthy tones of the long grasses. The weather provided a natural, timeless, soft tone to the image, that I would never have authentically captured in a studio setting.
