Description

This image shows a bear and one of her two near-grown cubs on the Isfjord in Svalbard. One cub was much bolder and happy to stray on its own but this one was much more timid and stayed much closer to its mother. When the glacier behind them began to calve, the cub understandably became very anxious and showed signs of distress. It was at this point that the mother encouraged it to nurse, comforting and protecting it as the ice crashed down around them.
