This image is part of an editorial series named ‘Liminal Space’ featured in Drapers Magazine exploring how clothing, prop and set design can be used as a narrational device in picture making to discuss themes of nostalgia and illusion. I collaborated with third year fashion student Molly Adlington, and utilised the youthful colour pallet and shape of her garment to enhance my overall compositional choices. This image took three practice shoots before I settled with the final lighting arrangement and set design you see before you. Evoking the careful thought and precision I had in order to create a scene that feels real and childlike, but also retains those staged liminal space elements to make the image seem oddly fake. Throughout my own childhood experience, the concept of a doll's house fascinated me in terms of its small-scale realism and its endless possibilities when controlling small figures in a game of house. But even though a doll's house resembles closely to real life, the underlying tone when playing felt almost sugar coated in childhood wonder and felt sinisterly fake to an adolescent me. This is what I believed to be the alluring factor of this retro toy and expresses in detail the ultimate definition of liminal space and my personal experiences with nostalgia.
