Sabah Softwoods, Sabah, Borneo
Nikon D850
Borneo elephants walk through an oil palm plantation and eat the trunks of felled old oil palm trees at Sabah Softwoods in Sabah, Borneo on 28 March, 2019. The elephants have been forced to feed on the palm oil crops as their natural habitat has been replaced by plantations. Home to the oldest jungles in the world, Malaysia and Indonesia produce 85-90% of world's oil palm. Its crop yield is at least 4 times more productive than other vegetable oil crop. The planting of oil palm has led to enormous levels of deforestation which in turn has resulted in species decline, including oraguntans and Borneo elephants.
