Each year I look forward to these Kittiwakes returning to this breeding site on the Northumbrian coast. Their scruffy compact nests are built on low south-east facing sandstone cliffs and the setting lends itself well for capturing images that show the birds in their natural landscape. The cliffs, made up of sedimentary sandstone, show remarkable wave like patterns along weathered rock strata. The birds spend most of the year out at sea and by mid-August they have left the colony and only their nests remain until these noisy, graceful and elegant gulls return the following spring.
