The Queen's Life Guards are stationed at the official entrance to St James' and Buckingham Palaces in London. Every afternoon of the year, in the courtyard of the Horse Guards, a dismounting ceremony takes place. The guards dismount from their horses and present themselves to the Officer for inspection. I arrived quite late for the ceremony and only available space to watch was at the rear. However, as the Officer moved around the guards I was immediately drawn to his white glove emerging from the sea of red coats, checking up on a loose button.
