Watching the seals in this cove, it's impossible not to be impressed by the dramatic surroundings they are living in; the shelves of slate that make up the beach, peppered with large rocks and boulders covered in vibrant green weed, all against the backdrop of crumbing cliffs and the distant hills. I wanted to capture all of these elements, but with a seal still clearly as the focal point of the photo and thankfully this individual provided me with ideal opportunity to do that. I'd been set up against one of the boulders on the beach, photographing other seals on the beach with my long 500mm lens. As I got up to change position, I noticed this seal had moved in on the other side of the boulder. Staying as hidden as possible, I changed to a shorter lens and poked my head and camera around the side of the boulder to take some photos. As I watched, it rolled over and briefly looked at me, before yawning and settling down to sleep. As a side note - whilst it does have a couple of rather sore looking cuts, it seemed otherwise in healthy condition. Many of the seals at this location seemed to have similar little cuts and abrasions, presumably caused by moving over the sharp slates and rocks that are scattered across the beach.
