If one is lucky enough to see a blue whale, it is almost impossible to comprehend just how big what one is looking at actually is. The mind frankly boggles. In open water there is nothing to relate or compare it to – you know you are looking at something utterly and awe-inspiringly massive, but just how massive is a mystery, the brain fails to compute. Research informs me that they are the largest creatures ever known to have evolved on Earth, roughly the same length as a large passenger jet plane, but I couldn’t have told you that at the time… I was too busy being mind-boggled. While snorkelling off the east coast of Sri Lanka under licence from the government, I was extremely fortunate to have this behemoth swim beneath, then rise back up, turn around and have a good look at me.
