Sahara Desert, Morocco
Canon Powershot
The MDS is a six-day, 251 km (156 mi)ultramarathon, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons. The race is held every year in southern Morocco, in the Sahara Desert and sees upto to 1000 runners from around the globe take part. Since the age of 18 when I first saw a photo of the race, I had promised that one day I would enter. 18 years later and less than 5 weeks post-back surgery I found myself at the foot of this sea of dunes on the first day, wondering what I had let myself in for and why I had taken a commission from a magazine to document it whilst running. The compact digital camera I brought succumbed to the sand after the first day and I was left with a 35mm SLR and 4 rolls of E6 film to tell the story of this incredible adventure.
