Description

World Cup Downhill rider Adam Brayton weaves around machinery deep inside the last working slate mine in England. This image fuses two of the things The Lake District is well known for, slate mining and mountain biking. The slate vein that runs through the inside of this mountain at 40 degrees, meaning the whole mine is pitched steeply downhill - a perfect playground for Adam. I used to be an adventure activity guide at Honister and I heard it remarked that the working mine could potentially make for some amazing mountain biking. After confirming this to be the case and gaining permission from the owners, Adam was the obvious choice to photograph as he rides at an elite level and also grew up locally. When I contacted him he was only too happy to help make some images. Unfortunately we could only synchronize an hour together in the mine due to busy schedules but that time resulted this image. It was taken for a book commission called 'Extreme Lake District'
