Description

The portrait came about as part of my first year photography degree. We were asked to create an on location, environmental portrait. I arranged several shoots based around young people in sport and their aspirations. This image was taken at Newcastle Fencing and Shooting Centre. The original shoot was indoors, however, the background was too distracting, so I re-shot the images outdoors to simplify them and focus on the sitter. I chose to shoot the image at sunset composing for the background while allowing the 500w Bowens light, beauty dish and reflector to light the sitter evenly. I shot at ISO 100 1/125 of a sec and F18 to ensure the gun, shooting glasses and hat were in focus. One of the main things I have taken from the first year of my degree is to always try to get the image correct in camera. I believe I achieved this in the image as very little editing was required in post processing. 12-year-old Toby’s dream is to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He competes Internationally at under 21 level for his country, and holds a plethora of medals, and records. Toby waits patiently to be issued his Athletes firearm licence to compete at the next level. Age being the only barrier. This is echoed in his red cheeks, slightly oversized shirt, and the scale of the gun in proportion to Toby. His shooting glasses add an interesting element to the portrait. This ongoing series shows the commitment, drive and sometimes fragility of Great Britain’s young, aspiring Olympians.
