Description

While working on a documentary of this triathlete we spent some time in Mallorca filming training sequences. I was also keen to capture some stills so on the day we went to Sa Callobra and I spied this location I made sure we had time to head back there for sunset. The shot had simply revealed itself to me in a flash. Technically it was very challenging - the sun was setting and I wanted it to be a beautiful landscape scene that just happened to include the cyclist. So I used ND grads to hold the sky back, but I needed a fast enough shutter speed to keep him frozen as he cycled through. This meant the light on him wasn't strong enough for the subtle shadow or to make him stand out, so I hid a flashgun beside the road to light him at the point I wanted to capture him. It mimics the setting sun and helps give a shadow to his right. I knew the foreground was still going to be too dark though, so I used a gently wash of flash for the foreground in front of the camera to help provide more depth to the scene.
