I produced this image as part of my coursework at the start of my Degree. The original idea was a fishbowl containing a goldfish. A sentient being that serves the purpose of becoming a much-loved part of the family. I developed the idea into this image. This image for me depicts life as a child from a working class famil, like myself. The highlight of the summer was a trip to the seaside on a coach full of other families from the council estate. Waiting outside the shop for the coach to come. Singing songs all the way there and sucking on Fishermans friends so you didn't get travel sick. The excitement of paddling in the sea. The sand in your egg and tomato (seaside) sandwiches. The pain of the sand being scrubbed off your feet. The thrill of being allowed to go to the fairground for an hour if you were really good. The waltzer. The smell of chips with vinegar. Hook-A-Duck was everyone's favourite. Prize every time. Guaranteed happiness. Spur of the moment shopping for a new addition to the household. I was never allowed a fish, so I usually opted for a cuddly toy. For a lot of people, it was the highlight of the day. Taking that tiny creature back on the bus for its long journey back home, hoping it survives long enough to show all of your friends and waiting for the next trip to the seaside.
