Opposite the entrance to Norwich’s Dukes Wharf Car Park sits a disused Eastern Electricity building. In 2006, artist Rory Macbeth painted all 40,000 words of Thomas More's 16th century novel ‘Utopia’ on each side of the structure. Although the building was set to be demolished in 2006 it remains standing today. I spotted the two pigeons sat before the building and approached the scene expecting to shoot the two birds at in a stationary position. The moment I pressed the shutter release, one of the birds took flight, adding an otherwise unexpected element of movement to the image. The photo was shot at f8.0 in order to maintain focus on the backdrop and the subjects in the foreground. Although the movement of the pigeon taking flight was unintended, a shutter speed of 1/160 achieved a balance of blur and suspended motion.
