Kumano, Japan
Sony A7RIV + Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8
As a keen fireworks photographer I jumped at the chance to visit Japan aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, whose itinerary included a visit to the spectacular Kumano summer fireworks festival. The ship docks a few miles off shore, meaning the fireworks have the mountains as their backdrop. Capturing them is not trivial, however! Although the ship is anchored, it still drifts, meaning that long exposures exceeding 5 seconds were leading to soft or blurry images. Not a problem for the finale of the show, however, when hundreds of small fireworks are launched at once, creating a ceiling of fireworks in the night sky. The fireworks in this image were captured in a single frame of only a few seconds.
