Land Animal
Laguna del Lagarto ecolodge, Costa Rica
Canon EOS R5, RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM at 200.0mm, f/9.0, 3.2 sec, tripod for the camera plus several flash guns on tripods triggered by the bat breaking an infra-red beam.
A Pallas’s long-tongued bat (Glossophaga soricina) flying in to collect a nectar-like sugar solution placed within a banana flower in Laguna del Lagarto, Costa Rica. The bats broke an infra-red beam, triggering a group of flash guns placed on stands around the flower. It was a question of focusing on the flower and then using a long exposure to enable the camera to record the image when the flash guns were fired. We were obviously in the dark and when looking at the images later, it was amazing to see just how many bats were flying around. The species is listed by the IUCN as of Least Concern and stable.
