As a resident of Leith in Edinburgh I've always loved the area's mix of old and new in its architecture and that's what I hoped to capture in this composition. I set up my frame to include the old ivy-covered wall to the right, with the cobbles in the road all flanked by the hulking presence of the block of flats behind. I was especially keen to shoot this at night to capture the building as it transforms from a standard grey block into an array of coloured squares that make it look almost like a dot-matrix display. I shot several frames here, but I was especially pleased to time this image to include a bus driving through, the long 23-second exposure turning its bright lights into ribbons that flow through the scene. The camera was locked down on a tripod and set to f/6.8, 23.0s, ISO64.
