Description

The Samay is one of three traditional figures in the mythology of the Jola ethnic group in The Gambia and Senegal. Multiple times a year, a folk festival will be organised in a village. The Samay invites the people of the village to participate in the festivities. Wielding a stick, he mandates strict order in the community and is believed to know everything that happens in the village. Mythology forms a strong part of everyday life in Gambia. I liked the juxtaposition between the mythological figure and its traditional connotations with the ordinariness of the living room.
