Description

Whooper Swans over winter on Lake Kussharo, in Hokkaido, Japan. Seeming unperturbed by the harsh wind and well below freezing temperatures, this swan rested, then casually walked to an area of open water, kept clear by a hot spring. I lay on the ice to get an eye level perspective, and used a relatively narrow aperture to maintain focus on both the subject and the distant mountains, which were partially obscured by the spindrift, whipped up by the strong wind.
