I’ve always been drawn to street sports. If I see a skate park, there is no doubt I will got check it out. On this particular evening at golden hour, my aunt was driving my mother and I through Lima when I spotted this bike park. While investigating, I was informed that I was photographing the Peruvian National BMX team! What you don’t notice from this image is that I was sitting on the floor behind a fence. It was way darker than it looks in this image and I didn’t want to waste precious light time by trying to find a way around said fence! This was the first time I’d shot in shutter priority under pressure. I needed faster shutter speeds to prevent the motion blur of the BMX riders, but light was fast escaping. Setting my aperture priority to 1/125 was the best I could get away with without taking my ISO beyond its base value of 640 - I didn’t want to risk a noisy image as I knew I'd be raising some shadows during post-processing. My lens was set at 96mm, and an aperture of f/4 allowed me to preserve enough light to not only showcase the beautiful sunset colours, but also allowed me to preserve the colours of the BMX bikers’ clothing. I didn’t overcome motion blur in its entirety, but it’s a beautiful and vibrant action shot nonetheless.
