Description

I am passionate about photographing newborn Scottish babies in their heritage clan tartans and was honoured to have the opportunity to capture this for Scotland's first baby of 2023. On the 1st January 2023, the first baby born in Scotland was Dominic Moffat. Born in my local area, I traced and contacted the parents and offered to photograph him in the Moffat clan tartan. Dominic is wrapped in two identical clan tartan scarves - one swaddled around him and a second concertinaed to the left, away from the light. I chose a red bonnet to compliment the red in the tartan and finished the set-up with a Clan Moffat kilt pin to further pay tribute to his Scottish heritage and Moffat Clan. Dominic is 9 days old in this image. Capturing him smiling was more than I could have hoped for. The image was captured in my home studio in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire on the south west of Scotland. I used a Canon R5 with a Sigma Art 35mm lens and a D-Lite One strobe with a 135cm Elinchrom Rotalux Octabox. Camera settings were 1/160 f3.5 ISO 100.
