This portrait of my uncle is part of a Tryptic called Three Brothers. Inspired by tracing back my family tree, I wanted to capture some family portraits for future generations. Looking back at my ancestors I often wonder what it would be like to speak to them? what did they do for a living? What was their personality. It's difficult to tell from a single photograph. In this portrait my uncle is dressed in his usual, every day, casual clothes, however, when my friends see the portrait, they assume him to be a sailor. It makes me think of the quote by photographer Richard Avedon "A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth".
