Bushy Park - London
Canon 5D Mk iv and Canon 500mm f4 Mk i
I think I can speak for many wildlife photographers when I say we all have a list of images we would love to capture and ticking one off is a great sense of achievement. This image is one that has been high on my list ever since I started over 7 years ago. I've been photographing the deer rut at Bushy Park for 3/4 years and its always something I have tried to look out for but unfortunately never had the opportunity to witness, that was however till last years season. I had spent the early morning photographing the action in some lovely golden light, I'd actually made the decision to call it a day and head back to the car park when I noticed two stags walking parallel to one another. Having only the 500mm lens on me I knew I wasn't going to be able to get much in the frame so I started to walk further down the path alongside the lake, I must of only walked 10 meters before the larger of the stags pushed the other into the water, it was at this exact moment I knew what I could potentially capture. So with the 500mm slung over my shoulder I ran to the end of the lake and positioned myself directly opposite to the fierce battle. I was only there a few seconds before the loser unlocked antlers and began to run straight through the lake towards me causing once resting waterfowl to flee the scene just as the victor bellowed in the background. It all happened so quick but the memory and image will stay with me for a lifetime. Camera Settings - 1/1000th, ISO 200, f4
