An image that marks one of the most memorable experiences of my life. A moment I would never have dreamed of witnessing. To experience the eruption in all of it’s glory and the birth of new land, I had to endure a gruelling 6 hour round hike with minimal sleep, gale-force winds, torrential rain and fog so thick you couldn’t see more than two metres ahead of you. But a landscape so hot, when you arrived you dried off almost instantly, it was like sitting right in front of a roaring fire. A warm welcome to an unforgettable view. My drone had to battle the intense conditions. Holding off wind speeds beyond its max capability, but a risk worth taking to capture this once in a life time moment. The drone enabled me to see a unique perspective, full of shapes and textures emerging from the core of the crater, that I couldn’t see from the ground. As I followed the bright orange river paving it’s way to shallower ground, watching new land being formed, I noticed there was more life within it, a phoenix rising from its ashes. To me this was more than just an incredible natural phenomenon. It symbolised a re-birth. New land, a fresh start and the beginning of a burning passion. It was the birth of a new desire for travel and photography which I’ve been obsessed with ever since, transforming my newfound hobby into a career and a new direction in life. This image was taken at Fagradalsfjall volcano, Iceland in 2021 on a DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It is a three shot vertical bracketed panorama, stitched together in Lightroom. ISO 100, f/3.2
