Dubai Desert
Canon 5D MKiii, Canon EF24-70mm - f6.3 @1/125 ISO100
This image is taken from a fashion editorial commissioned by Galleria Magazine, out in Dubai. The brief was for us to shoot some of the couture available in Dubai out in the desert. This was one of the last shots of the day and was really tough shooting. Around 4.30pm the winds pick up and the sand all starts blowing and lifting. We got caught in the winds at the end of the day which ended up being both a blessing and a curse. As you can see from the camels and the camel herder in the background who was part of our crew, he had sat to gain shelter from the sand and had his face covered to protect himself. All the crew apart from the model and myself had gone to seek shelter in the crew trucks and there was just myself and the model out shooting. The reason the models eyes are closed is simply that there was so much sand blowing in our eyes that neither of us could really see properly so we had closed her eyes for protection. My face was obviously partially protected by my camera but there was sand everywhere! It took a very long time to get the sand out of my kit! However when reviewing the images later this one stood out not just for the mood and the moment but the winds had given the sands and dunes an almost ethereal feel to it as all the sands were shifting and the dunes in the background ended up with a lovely soft feel to them, a quality that was only apparent in this shot.
