I noticed a tree on my local High Street where a large group of Pied Wagtails would roost overnight - every day around sunset the birds would congregate on surrounding buildings before gathering in the tree and settling down for the evening. Over the festive period the tree was decorated with lights. This did nothing to deter the birds, and they'd often roost quite close to the bulbs - maybe gaining a small amount of heat from them. The combination of the decorative lights, and the other artificial light sources from the surrounding buildings offered a chance to photograph the birds after the Sun had set, provided a hint of the urban context, and allowed the opportunity to experiment a bit creatively, such as with this image where I used the decorative lights to create the bright orbs in the foreground, while almost silhouetting the birds against the bright orange backdrop of a building lit up by a streetlight.
