Description

I have a passion for railway photography and to recreate the old days of steam. An opportunity arose when I saw the light shining down the wheels of one of the steam locomotives in the shed at Didcot Railway Centre and I felt that if I stood still long enough in the shot then it would make a really cool photograph! This 'selfie' was taken on a tripod, the camera was set on a timer of 10 seconds to allow me to run into position and freeze. I positioned my head at a certain angle to allow the light to catch my eye as I looked up at the locomotive, I stood extremely still and I ensured that my railway headlamp was lit and facing the camera on the floor. I also positioned the camera at a certain height to ensure that the eye is lead down the rods attached to the wheels, this gives the photograph some depth. I achieved my goal of transforming a simple image into something quite ghostly! It was featured in Railway Magazine a month later as part of a Ghost story about an engineman who worked on a depot back in steam days. Camera Settings: 6 Seconds, F8, ISO400, image turned monochrome to create an authentic timeless feel.
