Purlesque is one of a series of images exploring the idea of Colour Genetics in equines. As visual creatures, we have found a way to feed our creativity through the breeding of animals to enhance and enjoy the many effects of genetic mutation and code. The horse in this image is a stallion, that carries the pearl gene. His job; to be bred with many different sports horses in the hope of passing on specific colour genetics that can create a shiny, almost metallic coat. Of course, we all love to see beauty, and as humans our ability to control and manipulate beauty can become dangerous. As with most things, there is a point at which beautiful can become dangerous, even deadly. Genetics can be pushed to the point of breaking, and most mutations will not only carry interesting coat patterns, colours or characteristics; they will also carry disease, pain and suffering. The idea that we are breeding animals more for aesthetic beauty, for ornamental value instead of the functional uses that historically created many of the breeds we see today is a very relevant, but difficult topic to explore. Its a vast subject to discuss and for many not one they care to spend time on, and so by creating a series of images to satisfy the visual, but spark questions and hopefully educate for for me; the first step forward.
