Nikon D7200, Nikon AF-S 105mm Micro lens, Nikon SB600 Speedlite and custom made flash diffuser
This is a single shot taken with my Nikon D7200, Nikon 105mm macro lens and flash with custom diffuser in my office in Manchester. I used manual focus, f/32 aperture and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second. The females of this species (Phidippus regius - regal jumping spider - 18mm in size) display various colour combinations from pink and black to blue and white to orange and grey! At the University of Manchester, where I am currently studying, both the aerospace engineering and ecology departments are collaborating in order to understand the biomechanics of this jumping spider species. They are using 3D CT scanning and high speed, high resolution imaging to reveal how these spiders are able to jump so quickly and accurately to catch their prey. They hope to use this information to design novel agile micro-robots that are currently out of reach of modern science. As is the case with all of my macro images, my only intention is to capture the amazing detail, colours and personalities of tiny creatures that would otherwise be missed with the naked eye.
