This image of an ant is the 2nd image in the amber series. This specimen is encapsulated within Baltic amber and is dated at 40 million years old. The technical challenges in producing this image were considerable. Firstly the specimen is only 3mm in length which required a focus stacked image of around 400 images. The second challenge was the light refraction created by the internal structure of the amber and the microscopic scratches on the surface. The solution was to submerge the amber in a liquid of a similar refractive index to amber, this enabled the light to travel in a straight line rather than bend which would create substandard images.
