Description

On a frigid morning at 4600m in the Peruvian Andes I dragged myself from my tent, into the bitter cold and went traipsing off across the frozen earth in search of some foreground to shoot as the sun rose. I had my mind on the classic landscape shots from the Rockies or the Alps where you can easily find fields of colourful wildflowers under glaciated peaks, in reality no such thing exists in this harsh, high-altitude part of the Andes. At this kind of height only the hardiest of life can survive so my thoughts turned to capturing something that shows exactly that. I came across this plant; frozen and gnarly growing between two rocks - a far cry from the pretty wildflowers found in other mountain ranges, instead its beauty lies in its resilience to the harsh world it calls home. I knew this was exactly what I was looking for, I set up my tripod and started firing off exposures, trying to perfectly time the images as the clouds danced around the mountain peak intermittently exposing and covering it. This image consists of three photos focus-stacked and exposure-blended, all shot at the same location in the same period of time.
