I wanted to experiment with some fruit under water. I used a small tank filled with water and carbonated water, the tank sat on some white card for reflective light, black card at the back of the tank, I suspended a cherry into the water and waited for the right amount of bubbles to cover it, a off camera flash above the tank, I used a polarising filter on the lens and polarising film on the front of the flash, this is cross polarisation to stop reflections and bring out the colour of the cherry. It was an image i had in my minds eye, but creating it was very frustrating, I had to constantly wipe away bubbles that were forming on the front and back glass of the tank (a wooden ruler gently across the glass to wipe them away) too many bubbles on the cherry and it would float up, move to one side ect, bubbles would move up and join into others, making big bubbles, I wanted an even size all over! I was constantly taking the cherry out and back in again then waiting for the bubbles to form. I didn't realise how hard it was going to be to get it all right, playing with settings, everything in manual. After a couple of hours I was finally happy with a couple of shots. Processing the image in Lightroom, my jewelled cherry came to life. It was great fun to experiment, keep trying until I got the image I wanted. Settings, ISO 100, F13, 1/200 sec, ¼ power output flash, remote release, wooden ruler, camera on a tripod.
