Description

One of the fastest cetacean's on the planet, the Dall's Porpoise, soars through British Columbia's pacific ocean like a beautiful torpedo. Its fluke flicks back and forth slowly, yet somehow propels the porpoise at lightning speeds. This has been one of the most challenging shots of the year for me. Not only do the porpoise swim ridiculously fast, but they dip, dive and turn at every moment, sometimes creating a large splash that soaks your camera lens. I had tried to capture this image many times before, but there was always a flipper out frame, water on the glass or another porpoise that photobombed the image! Until - one dark, foggy day when a family of 5-6 porpoise zipped over to our boat cruising at 15kts (porpoise are very playful and love to ride along the wakes of other boats). I laid on the bow of the boat, pulled back to 70mm and at 1/2000 f/4.5 ISO320 managed to capture the shot I had envisioned for over a year - A frozen moment in time of one of the most beautiful, charismatic and playful animals that call the water their home, with nothing to distract the audience from the peacefulness of the subject. My goal with this image is for the viewer yet another reason to love and protect the ocean, and all that it inhabits.
