Whinlatter Forest, The Lake District.
Nikon D610, 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 @ 42mm. ISO 640, 1/250 @ f4.5 , 1 x Nikon SB700 with radio trigger.
Whinlatter Forest is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the UK. One misty morning I met athlete Dava Waterhouse there just after dawn, with a plan to create some striking silhouettes using off camera flash . This photograph is from the first composition we set up. It took me a little while to position the flash just where I needed it (the unit was hung in a tree inside a DIY clear waterproof case). Timing was crucial and it took us a few takes to get right. As soon as I saw it on the LCD I knew I had the image I was aiming for. None of the other pictures from this shoot were quite as effective at conveying the feeling of riding in such atmospheric surroundings at that time of day. This photograph is for a book commission I am currently working on called 'Extreme Lake District.'
