Lake Annecy - Haute-Savoie, France
Canon EOS 550D, EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 - handheld
As the sun sets over the mountainscpae in the distance, a pair of tandem para-gliders finish their decent from the Dents de Lanfon over Lake Annecy which is hidden below, engulfed in golden mist. This was a very special scene to capture, the lighting was perfect. The sun was so low in the sky that it cast huge shadows over the mountain peaks with great stretches of amber light bursting through the valleys in the background of my image, creating a very dramatic yet romantic scene. I waited for the perfect moment to capture the gliders just before they sunk beneath the golden cloud-line. My timing was essential in this image. I realised the vivid colour tones wouldn't last much longer as the sun was about to set, so it was challenging to commit to a decision on when best to capture the image - I wanted to pick out the paragliders just as they dropped low enough in the frame, to attempt to single them out in the golden mists below. I really love the end result of this image, I feel its presence portrays a powerful romanticism... I'm left wondering how special it must have felt for my subject, to be peacefully gliding through a world of gold. It just goes to prove that sport isn't always about competition, it doesn't have to mean energy-fulled high-adrenaline action, it can simply be for personal recreational purposes... Just another way to enjoy a beautiful evening in the mountains.
